Starship Victory, a faithful alien spacecraft guarding its shattered system for 10,000 years, agreed to come to Earth. Now Captain Maddox and his crew have a new assignment. They must find Professor Ludendorff before the New Men do.

The New Men need Ludendorff's help so they can capture the alien starship. Maddox needs the neglected superweapons repaired so he can rescue a Star Watch fleet trapped deep in enemy territory.

But time is running out for the stranded, battered fleet. They're low on food, fuel, and missiles. Worse for Maddox, Meta is missing, kidnapped by the enemy, while the alien personality in the AI struggles to adjust to this new era. Can Maddox pull everyone together or will the brilliant New Men win yet another stunning victory? The Lost Command is the second book in the Lost Starship series.

The Lost Command Lost Starship Series Volume 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Vaughn Heppner Mark Boyett Books

Much better than the first book of the series, 'The Lost Command' adds more background to Captain Maddox and the ship's AI, as well as the burgeoning romance with Meta. We finally get to meet Dr. Ludendorff (I must be just as smart as him because I figured out the ships AIs problem before he came aboard) and he gets some of the ships problems fixed.

Personally, I think this is Vaughn Heppner's best book. His writing style and thought processes telling the story have really matured. After 'Star Viking' I was ready to write him off as a hack, but THE LOST STARSHIP series has changed my mind.

If you haven't read the first episode, that is ok the book gives enough background to get you up to speed. Also, the story is complete, no stupid cliffhangers.

I highly recommend THE LOST COMMAND..

The Lost Command Lost Starship Series Volume 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Vaughn Heppner Mark Boyett Books Reviews

I read this book because I felt the author had shown some promise with his first book of the series, The Lost Starship. The first book introduced a lo of characters, without giving us sufficient insight into their backgrounds to establish an emotional connection. This follow.up book also is lacking in characterization, but since we don't get introduced to a whole bunch of new characters we do learn more about the ones from the first book, enough so to want to read on into the third book of the series. Seen from a sales persective the author did his job.

The Lost Command storyline is about a team of experts in their different fields trying to unlock the secrets of an alien starship in time to save a fleet of military starships from Earth from destruction at the hands of the New Men, some superhumans bred on a remote planet that want to destroy most of humanity and rebuild a superior genetic strain of humans. The storyline introduces more alien artefacts, alludes to alien involvement with the pyramids on Earth, develops the idea of longevity amongst a select few, struggles with the problems of multiethnicity in the form of the main character who needs to find out both what and who he is, but once again I ask myself why I should care about any of this. The author's lack of attention to his technology tree is extremely irritating, so as a reader I found myself having to constantly set aside "disbelief" when I hit a part of the story where the tech-level was so "low" as to be implausible in a century, let alone in the far off future this story is set.
.
According to the speculative SF database http//www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?13144 the author has released 30 works in the last 2 and a half years, which may account for both the lack of characterization (since it takes time to get to know even the characters you invent yourself) and the inconsistencies (that can only be avoided by doing a heck of a lot of research and letting others proof your work). The author would be well advised to reduce his production rate in favor of more quality.

Book 2 was sufficiently well written to make me want to read book 3 of the series, but I can't really recommend anyone who hasn't read book 1 already to buy any of these. There is a whole lot of better SF out there you want to read before you touch this universe.
The ending struggles to make up for the long stretches of depressing failures and victimization of all protagonists. If I hadn't had a long layover, I might have put it down, never to return. To me, a good space opera rises and falls, allowing the protagonists to fence with their foes as it goes. This story arc carries so much backstory that it loses that rhythm and becomes a dreary journey. The drumbeat of every "good" character repeatedly being outsmarted, out fought, and out-foxed by the seemingly invincible New Men and their minions becomes wearying as it continues on well past the halfway point of the book. In the end it is hard to feel satisfied by the climactic final battle, which itself seemed overly simplistic. As a stage-setter for a rip-roaring concluding book, this installment may be necessary, but it felt a lot like required-reading homework on it's own. This one is a slog, and if the third book in the series repeats this I likely won't finish it.
First and foremost, I purchased this book, the first book, and all subsequent books. None were given to me for a good review.

In this sequel to The Lost Starship, the team that was tasked with finding the alien starship Victory is reunited to reboard the starship in order to retrieve the scientist who just might know how to unlock the starship's secrets and to also rescue the Fifth Fleet.

This book has excellent pacing...there were a couple of nights I stayed up late just because I wanted to see what happened next! I like that the crew represent real people with real problems. They are perfectly imperfect...even the captain...who doesn't really want to be their captain. I liked that there were so many twists and turns in the story and that some things are not fully explained because as you find out, they are part of the bigger picture. I also liked that the time delays in space were not glossed over. It took days to maneuver the ships and months for the Fifth Fleet to cross the void. And the space battles, though still exciting, I thought were strategically well thought out and realistically inclined...not the glitz and glamorous type you might see in a Star Trek movie.

Not much to complain about really, I totally enjoyed this book! I guess if I had to find one thing, it would be that I don't feel like Riker got enough pages. He's a fascinating character who played a pivotal role in the first book...but seemed to have taken a backseat in this one.
